Where do you find the best sports fans in the world?
If there’s a NASCAR event in town, the answer to the above question is…everywhere. That is to say, grocery stores, retailers, home and garden suppliers, gas stations, convenience stores. This week, NASCAR drivers and fans were spotted at all of these businesses and more in preparation for this weekend’s AAA Texas 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway. And one thing is perfectly clear, NASCAR fans LOVE their sport, especially their drivers. It’s what brought them out to these places for a chance to meet the stars and get an autograph from the likes of Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski… Read More

The fastest state in the U.S.
There’s an old saying that, “Everything is bigger in Texas.” Based on recent developments and upcoming events in the Lone Star State, I’d say everything is getting faster in Texas as well. Last week, the Texas Transportation Commission opened a stretch of highway south of the capital in Austin that lays claim to the fastest legally allowed speed in the U.S. The posted speed limit? Eighty-five. For 41 miles, State Highway 130 (aka “Pickle Parkway”) heads west toward San Antonio. The increase in mph for Segments 5 and 6 is in part an attempt to alleviate some of the congestion… Read More

Cars that will get your attention – and hold it
A couple small things grabbed my attention while perusing recent online automotive stories at Car and Driver and FoxNews.com. They are the Tata Nano and the Ford C-Max Hybrid, two cars hoping to make a big splash in the U.S. auto market. Produced in India (and sold there for about $3,000), the Nano is expected to sell for about three times that much here. The C-Max is pricier at $25,000-plus. Aaron Robinson writes about the 2013 C-Max online for Car and Driver, and FoxNews.com reports on the Nano, saying it’ll hit the U.S. automobile market within three years. “After watching… Read More

State Fair of Texas: A taste of corny dogs; a feast of trucks and cars
For many, the State Fair of Texas is all about the food. That means corny dogs, at least. Others go for the midway and carnival games, livestock show, Texas Star Ferris wheel or cotton candy. But many go for the new-model cars and trucks. This year, approximately 400 of them are on display over three-plus weeks across 350,000 square feet of exhibit space in two buildings and an outdoor area. The list of manufacturers participating in this year’s show runs long and deep. But not all vehicles are created equal, according to Terry Box of The Dallas Morning News. Five… Read More

On the road again; I just can’t wait …
On the road again; I just can't wait... Road trip. There’s just something magical about putting those two words together. Really, who doesn’t need to take a road trip now and then just to maintain some perspective? Road trips are poetry in motion, literally, with calming and deeply restorative effects. The phrase conjures different things for different people, but usually evokes images of traveling companions – family or friends – rolling down a scenic highway to an interesting destination. I’ve taken road trips with my family for vacations and father-son bonding road trips.Among my all-time favorite road trip destinations – along with… Read More

Rory McIlroy -- The Heart of a Champion
The Heart of a Champion At just 23 years old, golfer Rory McIlroy continues to amaze on the course, playing at a level well beyond his years. Over the weekend, McIlroy won the PGA Championship by eight strokes, beating the likes of veterans such as Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els. The win makes him one of only two players under the age of 36 with at least two major titles, the other being Tiger. The victory also moved McIlroy up six places in the FedEx Cup standings, to No. 2 behind Tiger. The Northern Ireland-born pro… Read More

How "Legos and Autos" Drive Innovation
How "Legos and Autos" Drive Innovation Did you know the Lego Group out of Denmark introduced the first “Automatic Binding Bricks” in 1949? Those interlocking blocks have come a long way in  60-plus years, showing up in amusement parks, tied to movies such as Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, TV shows (Ninjago) and video games (Batman 2, Indiana Jones). It seems the little blocks are more popular these days then when I first started clicking the plastic parts together in the 1970s. To this day, when I think of Legos, I think of vehicles. As a kid… Read More

The Scenic Route
The Scenic Route For us, summer is synonymous with road trips. It’s only one month into the season, and we’ve already had some memorable travel experiences. (Including a jaunt to New York City, which hardly qualifies as a “road” trip, but we did have some interesting cab rides.) Along the theme of road trips, National Geographic recently published a book titled The World’s Most Scenic Drives: 101 Spectacular Trips. They also have a larger volume called Drives of a Lifetime: 500 of the World’s Most Spectacular Trips. Both books include beautiful photographs and cover such places as Alaska’s Cook Inlet,… Read More

An Exclusive Interview with Golfer Rory McIlroy
An Exclusive Interview with Golfer Rory McIlroy This week kicks off the second major in the world of golf for 2012 -- The U.S. Open Championship. The Olympic Club in San Francisco will host the tournament that officially begins Thursday, June 14, and finishes Sunday the 17th. (Subtle reminder: that’s Father’s Day as well.) This year’s Open should be especially exciting as Tiger Woods (who won in 2008) is coming off a win at the Memorial tournament. Another competitor to keep an eye out for is last year’s Open champ – Rory McIlroy. Not only is McIlroy a great golfer,… Read More
