An Exclusive Interview with Golfer Rory McIlroy
This week kicks off the second major in the world of golf for 2012 — The U.S. Open Championship. The Olympic Club in San Francisco will host the tournament that officially begins Thursday, June 14, and finishes Sunday the 17th. (Subtle reminder: that’s Father’s Day as well.)
This year’s Open should be especially exciting as Tiger Woods (who won in 2008) is coming off a win at the Memorial tournament. Another competitor to keep an eye out for is last year’s Open champ – Rory McIlroy. Not only is McIlroy a great golfer, he’s a great guy as well. We caught up with the Northern Ireland-born pro to discuss some golf and non-golf topics. Here are his thoughts on his favorite player, favorite course, and the first car he owned.
Santander Consumer USA: Of all the places you’ve played so far, what’s your favorite course?
Rory McIlroy: Augusta National
SCUSA: What’s the best thing about the game of golf?
RM: You’re out there on your own and you have no one to blame but yourself
SCUSA: Who is your favorite golfer of all time?
RM: Tiger
SCUSA: What is your personal motto?
RM: Not quite sure I have a personal motto yet but it would be something along the lines of be yourself and enjoy life.
SCUSA: You’ve been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Children’s Fund. Tell me about that experience.
RM: My visit to Haiti was a very humbling experience. Being involved with UNICEF definitely gives you some perspective on life and just how lucky some of us are. I’m delighted to be able to help out in any way I can, even if it only means raising awareness. I’m really looking forward to my next trip.
SCUSA: If you weren’t playing golf, what would you be doing?
RM: Honestly, I have no idea.
SCUSA: What’s your favorite music to listen to?
RM: I listen to a bit of everything, but if I had to pick one artist, it would probably be David Guetta.
SCUSA: What was the first car you ever owned?
RM: BMW 1 Series
