Two weekends in a row
With spring having sprung and summer soon to sizzle, the weather is right and the green grass is ready for…you guessed it…golf season. In Dallas and Fort Worth, this weekend and last, some of the greatest in the game are tossing turf and tightening their grip to get a chance at some big prizes, engaging in the pastime of both the penny-wise and the plutocrats, that Winston Churchill described as being “…a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.”
Last weekend, in Dallas, competitors faced off in beautiful weather conditions at the HP Byron Nelson Championship, and this weekend, they’ll be heading over to Cowtown…that’s Fort Worth to Yankee-types…to brave bold breezes and some surly looking storms at Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.
Each May since 1946, the course at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, organizes and hosts the event. The Colonial tournament is one of only five on the PGA Tour that is invitational, meaning that it can use its own system to determine who participates, and that it does not offer open qualifying.
A tradition unique to the Colonial is the Champion’s Choice invitation, comprising two competitors who do not otherwise meet eligibility, receiving an invitation by former Colonial champions, to participate. Five such Champions’ choices have gone on to win the Colonial tournament, with Dave Stockton winning in 1967, the year in which he was selected.
The Byron Nelson Championship
The Byron Nelson tournament leads PGA tournaments in raising funds for charity, and has raised more than $121 million to date. It was launched in 1944, has been held at various courses over the years, and is organized by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. Byron Nelson won it that year, and in 1968, the tournament was named after the popular and perennial champion, keeping that name ever since.
Now played at the Four Seasons in Irving, Texas, the tournament is scheduled to move in 2019 to the Trinity Forest Golf Course, which is currently being built.
