New cars for first-time buyers to consider – AutoTrader.com

First-time car buyer?

Looking for a 2014 model, because an outgoing 2013 just won’t do?

There are plenty of vehicles out there from which to choose – too many, really, if you haven’t shopped for a new car before or figured out your own system for identifying favorites.

So then the question becomes: How do I narrow my choices among the many candidates?

Well, AutoTrader.com, the automotive information and shopping website, has come to the rescue with its “10 Best New Cars for First-Time Buyers: 2014 Edition” covering sedans, hatchbacks and crossovers. As well as a trio of used cars the website thinks you might want to consider.

“There’s never been a more exciting time to buy a car,” says AutoTrader.com’s introduction to its list of 10 new cars and three noteworthy used cars. “Fuel economy’s up, technology’s exploding and more manufacturers are fielding competitive vehicles than ever before. It’s an embarrassment of riches out there for 2014, even if you’re on a budget.”

“Whether you’re looking for a practical commuter car, a convenient crossover SUV or a sporty coupe, this handy list should point you in the right direction,” says AutoTrader.com, which took into account value, efficiency, versatility, performance and other factors in making its choices.

The website also provides photos and reviews of the 13 vehicles on the list.

Following are the AutoTrader categories and the vehicles the website selected (sorry, no trucks):

Sedans: Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla

Hatchbacks: Nissan Versa Note, Honda Fit, Ford Focus and VW Golf

Crossovers: Kia Sportage, Jeep Cherokee and Mazda CX-5

Wild Card: Scion FR-S

Pre-Owned Alternatives: Mazda Mazda3, 2010-13; Chevrolet Cruze, and Toyota RAV4, 2012 and earlier

Six of the 2014 models listed by AutoTrader.com also are recommended in the Consumer Reports “New Car Preview 2014” – Hyundai Elantra, Honda Fit, VW Golf, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5 and Scion FR-S. CR was unable to rate the Jeep Cherokee because it is a new model, replacing the Jeep Liberty.

The Toyota Corolla, of course, regularly is listed among top-selling vehicles in America.
