PHILADELPHIA (PR Newswire) – Sovereign Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Banco Santander, presented a $150,000 check to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. As the official bank of the Philadelphia Eagles, Sovereign-Santander presented the check at the Eagles’ home game Dec. 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals of which Sovereign-Santander was the presenting sponsor.
Jorge Moran, President and CEO of Sovereign Bank and Santander US Country head, presented the $150,000 check to the American Red Cross during the game. Accepting the donation was Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes, CEO of the Southeastern Pennsylvania American Red Cross. This donation adds to previous efforts by Sovereign-Santander to bring relief to the victims of Hurricane Sandy, including additional donations to the American Red Cross and to other regions of the bank’s footprint impacted by the storm.
“We’re pleased to have this unique opportunity to continue to give back to the communities where our clients and team members have been severely impacted,” said Moran. “Sovereign-Santander is appreciative of the support of partners like the Philadelphia Eagles who help us continue to raise awareness for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts through the American Red Cross.”
“As both a partner of Sovereign-Santander and the American Red Cross, we’re honored to work with two great organizations that continue to provide relief to those affected by Hurricane Sandy,” said Don Smolenski, President of the Philadelphia Eagles. “This donation exemplifies what a great partner Sovereign-Santander is, and how valuable their relationship is not only to the Eagles, but to the entire Philadelphia community as a whole.”
“Because the American Red Cross is funded solely by donations, the bank’s generosity helps the Red Cross continue to honor its commitment to comfort people in their hour of need,” Hughes said. “This donation will be used to fulfill the Red Cross mission to alleviate human suffering. We are so grateful for the support of Sovereign-Santander and the Eagles.”
In November, Sovereign-Santander presented a $250,000 check to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. CEO Jorge Moran joined with Fernando Alonso, world-renowned Scuderia Ferrari driver, to ring the New York Stock Exchange’s Closing Bell and presented the donation during a community event to honor the bank’s team members severely impacted by the story and community partners who have worked tirelessly during the crisis.
Sovereign-Santander is auctioning off a signed replica of a helmet worn by Alonso to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy. The auction is open until December 20 at www.charityfolks.com/alonso. Sovereign-Santander is also currently matching up to $500,000 for all donations made in their branches by team members and clients of the bank.
Santander Consumer USA, based in Dallas, also donated $10,000 to American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
