Top auto blogs can help car shoppers sharpen their focus

Auto blogs, like websites, can help shoppers make important decisions about their upcoming car purchases.

But sorting through them can be a time-consuming chore.

Unless you have some help narrowing your focus to those with the best information for your research. That’s where we come in – with help from Blogmetrics, Cision and Technorati – listings we used to compile our own ranking of some of the top auto blogs available on the Internet.

All three lists provide links – Technorati itself comprises nearly 1,200 auto blogs – so you can find those that best suit your needs when shopping for that new (or used) car.

Our top 10 auto blogs come from combining the rankings of the three of the listings we named above – although it is an approximation – generating results we expect you’ll find useful. Most of the blogs on our list have some combination of auto news, reviews, videos and photos. But you’ll also find technology reports, spy shots, podcasts and cars for sale (such as those on Automoblog).

Still, our top 10 is not so much a definitive listing/ranking as it is a starting place for your own ranking.

Here are our top auto blogs and some details about each:

  • Autoblog – A consensus top blog, including a Forbes magazine list, it comprises news, reviews, car comparisons, auto shows, enthusiast topics (e.g., rumor mill and spy shots), videos, podcasts and more.
  • Jalopnik (“Drive Free or Die”) – Another blog that ranks high on most lists, including Forbes, this includes a mix of news, reviews and videos with attitude (e.g., “Toyota Wants A Camry That Doesn’t Look So Horrendously Boring” and “Silverado Owner Gets Recall Notice, Truck Promptly Catches Fire”).
  • The Truth about Cars – Also a top-ranked blog, it features news, editorial views, videos and large photos.
  • egmCarTech – Appearing on all three ranking we used, this auto blog contains news, reviews, large photos, and photo slide shows. Unlike GM FastLane below, this blog does not feature General Motors.
  • TopSpeed – Auto news, previews, spy shots, technology and videos.
  • Hemmings Auto Blogs – Photo-heavy blog with a classic car tilt and “Find of the Day.”
  • AutomoBlog – News, reviews, car technology, manufacturers news, and cars for sale.
  • GM FastLane – GM news, photos and videos.
  • Green Car Congress – Hardcore news and analysis of “green” technologies.
  • KickingTires (Cars.com) – News, reviews and photos at the website that ranked No. 5 among those we covered in yesterday’s blog at The Open Road.

And if these 10 auto blogs aren’t enough, see the rankings at Blogmetrics, Cision and Technorati. A website called Konector also provides an unranked list of 139 auto blogs.
