J.D. Power names most appealing vehicles of 2013 – Part 1

Volkswagen Passat

A dozen cars and 11 other vehicles (CUV/SUVs, trucks and vans) have been named named awardees of the J.D. Power APEAL study for 2013, which seeks to identify the industry’s most appealing vehicles based on purchaser and lessee feedback.

The Volkswagen Group had the greatest success of any corporation, topping the APEAL rankings with five awardees, the Audi Allroad, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayenne, VW GTI and Passat, according to the J.D. Power results. Chevrolet had the highest number of awards for a single brand, though, with the Avalanche, Sonic and Volt each taking home a prize.

“The best brand overall was Porsche, which scored 884 out of a possible 1,000 points,” said J.D. Power, a marketing information services company.

“The top Japanese brand was Lexus with a score of 847, while the top American brand was Cadillac, at 841. The best mainstream brand was Ram, which received a very respectable 817. The industry average for this year’s study was 795, with 16 brands, all of which were mainstream, falling below the average.”

The 12 car awardees, according to J.D. Power, and their categories are: Fiat 500, city car; Chevrolet Volt, compact cars; Lincoln MKZ, compact premium cars; Porsche Boxster, compact premium sporty cars; Volkswagen GTI, compact sporty cars; Dodge Charger, large cars; Lexus LS, large premium cars; Volkswagen Passat, midsize cars; BMW 5 Series, midsize premium cars; Mercedes-Benz SL-Class, midsize premium sporty cars; Ford Mustang, sporty cars, and Chevrolet Sonic, sub-compact cars.

The web pages provide a lot more detail on the J.D. Power awardees.

“Appealing vehicles are simply good news for both consumers and automakers,” said David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power. “Even within the same vehicle segment, consumers are willing to spend substantially more on vehicles that they find attractive, provide the performance and utility they are looking for and have well-executed interiors. These vehicles also sell more quickly.”

The APEAL study looks at which brands have the most appealing cars based on sales figures, dealer inventory, brand loyalty, transaction and trade-in prices, and incorporates results from participants who gauged their vehicles on 77 different attributes, delivering a score out of 1,000 points.

The 2013 study is based on responses gathered by J.D. Power between February and May 2013 from more than 83,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2013 model-year cars and light trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership.

Tomorrow, look for the top CUV/SUVs (8), vans (2) and trucks (1) in the J.D. Power study.
